What to know
Whiplash is a neck injury associated with sudden movement of the head. After a car accident, it can cause neck pain, stiffness, headaches, or discomfort around the shoulders. Symptoms may take hours to develop. A medical assessment helps distinguish a neck strain or sprain from injuries needing different care. NHS whiplash guidance, AAOS neck injury guide
Recognizing symptoms after a collision
You may first notice discomfort when turning to look over your shoulder, getting out of bed, or sitting at a desk. Describe these changes at your appointment, including when they started and whether they are improving.
Neck pain that travels into an arm, or occurs with numbness, tingling, or weakness, deserves prompt medical attention. Severe persistent pain also needs assessment. These symptoms should not be dismissed as ordinary soreness. AAOS neck injury warning signs
Call 911 for sudden weakness or paralysis, major trouble walking, or another medical emergency after a crash. If you suspect a serious neck injury, avoid unnecessary movement while awaiting emergency help.
How whiplash is evaluated
The clinician asks how the crash happened and examines the neck. Depending on the findings, imaging may be used to investigate a fracture or another concern. Whiplash-related soft tissue injury does not necessarily appear on an X-ray. AAOS examination and imaging guidance
Bring any emergency records and tell the clinician about earlier neck problems. Helpful questions include: What have you ruled out? Which symptoms should prompt urgent reassessment? What movement is safe? When should I return if the pain continues?
Treatment and recovery
Once serious injury has been excluded, care may include appropriate pain relief, guidance on movement, and rehabilitation. Prolonged inactivity is generally discouraged for uncomplicated whiplash. Follow individual instructions, especially if another injury changes what is safe. Recovery varies, and some people have symptoms longer than others. NHS treatment guidance

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can whiplash hurt more the next day?+
Yes. Neck symptoms may become more noticeable after the initial injury. New or worsening symptoms still deserve medical attention.
Does a normal X-ray rule out whiplash?+
No. An X-ray can answer bone-related questions without showing a soft tissue neck injury.
