What to know
Suspected internal bleeding is a medical emergency. Call 911 rather than waiting for a clinic appointment. Bleeding inside the body can become life-threatening even when there is no visible external bleeding. MedlinePlus bleeding guidance
Why internal injuries may be difficult to recognize
A collision can expose the abdomen to blunt force. Organs or blood vessels can be injured without the skin being broken. Pain may initially be mild or overshadowed by another injury, and serious internal damage does not always produce visible bruising. MSD Manual abdominal injury guide
Feeling well immediately after a crash is not a home test for internal injury. Neither is pressing on the abdomen, checking for a bruise, or waiting to see whether pain becomes severe.
Warning signs after a crash
Symptoms that need emergency assessment include worsening abdominal pain or swelling, chest pain, faintness, weakness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or pale, clammy skin. Blood in urine, vomit, or stool can also be concerning after trauma. Do not assume these symptoms are simply anxiety or routine soreness. MedlinePlus signs of bleeding and shock
A mark across the abdomen where a seat belt rested should be shown to a clinician. The appearance of the bruise does not reliably establish the severity of an underlying injury. MSD Manual seat belt sign discussion
How emergency clinicians investigate
Assessment may include examinations, blood tests, and imaging such as ultrasound or CT. Treatment depends on the findings and the person’s condition. Some injuries need close hospital observation; others require procedures or surgery. MSD Manual diagnosis and treatment
Tell the emergency team what happened, where the impact occurred, and which medications you take. Blood-thinning medicines are particularly important to report because they can increase bleeding risk. MedlinePlus bleeding considerations
Emergency care comes first
SpineLUX’s outpatient resources can help with later injury-care questions after emergency needs have been addressed. They are not a substitute for emergency-department evaluation of suspected internal injury.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can internal injury occur without a visible wound?+
Yes. Blunt trauma can injure structures beneath intact skin.
Can I wait until tomorrow if symptoms are getting worse?+
Do not wait when internal bleeding or a serious abdominal injury is suspected. Seek emergency care.
What if I already left the emergency department?+
Follow the return precautions you were given. New or worsening emergency symptoms require reassessment; the earlier visit does not replace evaluation of a changed condition.
